Rules for Rose Specimen Exhibits
Please Read Carefully and Completely

1. Everyone is welcome to exhibit roses in this show provided all roses have been grown by the exhibitor in their own outdoor garden.

2. ALL EXHIBITORS AND SHOW PERSONNEL MUST REGISTER at the information desk located at the entrance gate. However, registration numbers are not required on entry tags.

3. Entries will be received from 7:00 AM until 9:45 AM, Saturday, May 19, 2001. Entries will close promptly. Exhibitors in the work area will be notified at 15 minutes before the show area is closed.

4. Only ONE exhibitor or ONE team from any one garden may enter any class. More than one entry of the same variety from the same garden will disqualify each.

5. ARS entry tags must be used. Fill out upper portion only with your complete name and address. Use only blue or black ballpoint pen. Do not use felt tips or rollerballs because ink may smear if entry tags gets wet.

6. The responsibility for proper identification and classification lies totally with the exhibitor, however, all possible assistance will be available by means of current ARS-recognized publications (including the Dobson/Schneider Combined Rose List) and our own Consulting Rosarians.

7. All entries must be entered under the American Rose Society official exhibition names: however, exhibitors may also include a rose’s commercial name on the entry tag for the benefit of the public.

8. Numbered test roses are not permitted to be exhibited in any class.

9. This is an alphabetically arranged show except for classes calling for several different varieties. Variety will constitute a separate class, and be judged on its merits for the variety.

10. Containers will be furnished by the Society in all classes except where noted.

11. Any unwanted growth may be removed from any specimen subject to penalty assessed according to the degree of impairment, and depending upon the proficiency of the removal. Remember, many points can be lost by carelessness or neglect in grooming specimens.

12. WEDGES may be used. Wedge should not protrude above the lip of the container. Judges may penalize for wedging that is distracting. NO SARAN WRAP OF ANY VARIETY.

13. American Rose Society rules of judging will prevail, including any recent changes. Only Blue Ribbon Winners are eligible for trophy or certificate awards. JUDGES DECISIONS ARE FINAL.

14. In case of disqualification or severe penalization, the judges will write the reason on the entry tag.

15. Each exhibitor agrees to conform to such rules and regulations as the Show Committee may authorize.

16. Neither the Fair Friends of Roses nor Seaside Park, Ventura County Fairgrounds assume responsibility for loss of, or damage to personal property; however, care will be exercised to protect the exhibits on display.

17. All rose specimens entered in the show become the property of the Society. The Show Committee reserves the right to remove wilted or inferior blooms at any time it is deemed necessary.

18. Trophies will be awarded on SATURDAY, at 2:00 PM. All winners should either be present to accept their trophies, or should make specific arrangements for their acceptance and delivery.

19. Avoid disqualification. Be careful of the following ARS rules for disqualification:

  1. Misnamed.
  2. Misclassed.
  3. Mislabeled (including omission of your name or its location anywhere but where specified).
  4. Stem-on-stem, except Old Garden Roses and Shrubs.
  5. Foreign substance on foliage, stems, or bloom (includes things used in grooming, such as oil, ink, needle, Q-tip or cotton ball).
  6. Not disbudded when required.
  7. Violation of ARS or local show rules.
  8. Misplaced.
  9. A rose not listed in any ARS official publication.

20. Official publications for use in judging in Modern Roses and its supplements, ARS Magazines, ARS Annuals, Handbook for selecting Roses, and the Dobson/Schneider Combined Rose List. However, any discrepancy between ARS publications and Combined Rose List will defer to ARS Publications.

21. Arrangement judges who are only judging the arrangement section of this show may enter roses in the horticultural section. Horticultural judges who are only judging the horticultural section of this show may place entries in the arrangement section.

Arrangements

1. These classes are open to all arrangers. All roses must be outdoor grown, but do not need to be arranger grown. However to be eligible for the Medal Certificates, the roses need to be arranger grown and so designated by placing an "AG" in the upper right corner of the entry tag. If arrangement is done by a Novice, put "N" on the entry tag. Only roses registered by the ARS will be permitted.

2. All roses must be identified on the entry tag. Incorrectly named roses will cause an entry to be penalized.

3. The use of the American Flag, artificial plant materials, painted or dyed fresh plant material, live animals, or plants on the State Conservation List will not be permitted.

4. Roses must be the dominant feature of all arrangements. Only first place winners are eligible for trophy and must score 92 points or more to be eligible for the Rosette and Medal Certificates.

5. Miniature arrangements must not exceed 10 inches in height, depth or width. They will be placed on an open table with white tablecloth.

6. Niches, backdrops, bases, and accessories are optional. The arranger has their choice of container(s).

7. Only one entry per arranger per class will be allowed. Arrangers from the same household will be permitted to enter individually, as long as they created the arrangement on their own.

8. The Fair Friends of Roses will take all precautions, but will not be responsible for arrangements or containers.
