RULES GOVERNING HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITS
1. Entries will be received from 6:30am until 9:30 am, Saturday, April 28, 2001 at the Balboa Park Club. No entries will be received after 9:30am.
2. Judging will be in accordance with current "Guidelines for Judging Roses" and addenda published by the American Rose Society, unless in conflict with this schedule, in which case this schedule controls. Decision of the judges will be final.
3. Specimens must have been grown by the exhibitor in his/her own private garden. Only one person or team from one garden may enter any one class.
4. Specimen judges of Horticultural Classes of this show and members of their families may not enter specimens, with the exception of Class 51.
5. Classification of all roses by color and type will be in accordance with Modern Roses XI, as modified or amended in ARS publications to the date of the show. Only roses so registered or listed are eligible for competition with the exception of Classes 27, 28, and 39.
6. All roses in this show will be arranged alphabetically. Each variety will constitute a separate class within the section and will be judged on its merits for that variety.
7. Exhibitors may make only one entry of a variety in a section. DUPLICATE ENTRIES WILL DISQUALIFY BOTH.
8. Specimen entries of climbing forms of hybrid teas, grandifloras, hybrid perpetuals, teas, floribundas, and miniatures will be entered in classes with their bush counterparts.
9. Any unwanted growth may be removed from the specimen. A penalty may be assessed according to the degree of impairment and depending on proficiency of removal.
10. American Rose Society entry cards MUST be used. Entry cards and specimen containers will be furnished. Display boards for Section G will also be furnished. EXHIBITORS MUST CHECK IN AT THE REGISTRATION DESK AND SIGN THE EXHIBITOR LIST. No exhibitor number will be used on entry cards. Only the top half of the entry card need be filled out, complete except for the exhibitor number. Pencil or blue or black ballpoint pen may be used. Write rose names as large and clearly as possible for benefit of public.
11. Wedging may be added to the container to hold roses upright. However, if wedging materials protrude above the lip of the vase, the specimen will be penalized. Wedging must allow the addition of water to the exhibit.
12. Horticultural entries shall be disqualified for the following reasons:
A. Misnamed, misclassed, misplaced, unlabeled or mislabeled;
B. Stem on stem;
C. Presence of foreign substance applied to foliage, stem or bloom to improve the appearance of the specimen;
D. Sidebud or sidebuds on a specimen that must be shown without sidebuds.
E. A specimen not registered with the A.R.S. (except Classes 27 and 28);
F. The appearance of the exhibitors name on any location other than the designated place on the entry tag.
13. Only authorized personnel will be permitted in the show area prior to opening of the show to the public. However, exhibitors in Section G and Section H (Challenge Class entries) may enter the show area for the purpose of placing entries in these sections.
14. While reasonable precautions will be taken to protect property, San Diego Rose Society cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage to exhibits.
15. No entries or awards are to be removed until the close of the show, and all entries except arrangements become the property of the host society. Trophies, other than those requiring engraving, will be awarded at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2001. Winners or their representatives should be present to accept the awards.
16. All sections other than Section G (Classes 34, 35, 36 and 37) are open to all rose growers subject to show rules. EXHIBITORS ENTERING SECTION G MUST HAVE BEEN SAN DIEGO ROSE SOCIETY MEMBERS AS OF APRIL 1, 2001. Entries of more than one stem in Section G must be displayed in separate containers, on display boards provided by the show committee. One entry per class.
17. Section H Challenge Classes (Classes 38 and 39) are open to all. Only one entry permitted per class.
18. Trophies will be awarded to blue ribbon winners only.
19. Mini-floras will be treated as Miniatures in classes calling for Miniature roses.
20. Entry to the rose show is free to all REGISTERED EXHIBITORS. A name tag will be provided at the time of registration to enter the show. Anyone who is NOT a registered exhibitor, Rose Show Judge or Rose Show Official must provide a pre-sale ticket or a paid ticket for entry to the show. NO EXCEPTIONS!

SECTION E - NOVICE
A novice is one who has not won more than three blue ribbons or
a trophy in past show competitions. A novice exhibitor is not
restricted to the Novice Class. Each entry consists of one stem.
Exhibitor may make multiple entries so long as each is of a different
variety. Classes will be arranged alphabetically without regard
to color.

Class 26 Single petaled hybrid tea. One bloom or spray, 5-12 petals, one stem.
Class 27 Seedling Rose.
Class 28 Unregistered or unknown variety, one stem. An unknown variety is one that the classification chairman is unable to identify.
Class 29 8" Floating Bowl. One hybrid tea, grandiflora or floribunda rose without foliage in an 8" open bowl. Rose must be floating. LIMITED - ONE ENTRY PER EXHIBITOR.
Class 30 4" Floating Bowl. Three miniature or mini-flora roses without foliage in a 4" open bowl. Rose must be floating. LIMITED - ONE ENTRY PER EXHIBITOR.
Class 31 Most Fragrant Rose.
Class 32 Big and Little Lookalikes. One large bloom (any type) and one miniature or mini-flora bloom, shown in separate vases. Except for size, the roses must be similar in appearance.
Class 33 Childrens Entry. 17 and under. One bloom or spray of any type rose grown in the family garden.
SECTION G - SAN DIEGO ROSE SOCIETY CHALLENGE CLASSES

AWARD: Best of Class Perpetual and Keeper Trophy
Class 34 CARL TRUBY TROPHY. A trophy to honor the memory of Carl Truby, a true rosarian and lover of all roses. Cycle of Bloom. One variety hybrid tea or grandiflora rose. One bud, one exhibition stage, and one fully open, shown in three separate containers.
Class 35 J.J. KENNEALLY MEMORIAL BOWL. A memorial established in 1963 to honor an ardent rosarian, a knowledgeable exhibitor, and active member of the San Diego Rose Society for twenty years. An entry of one hybrid tea or grandiflora of the highest type of exhibition quality. "When viewed from top, the exhibition form is generally from ½ to 3/4 open, is gracefully shaped with sufficient petals, symmetrically arranged in an attractive circular outline, tending toward a high center." Guidelines for Judging Roses, p. 18, 1993.
Class 36 SAN DIEGO ROSE SOCIETY TROPHY. A challenge class originated in 1957 to complete the coverage of color classes in the perpetual trophies. An entry of three different varieties of red or red-blend hybrid teas and/or grandifloras grown disbudded and properly named. Three separate containers.
Class 37 THE DEE BENNETT TROPHY. A trophy to honor the memory of Dee Bennett, who hybridized some of the most exquisite miniatures in Rosedom. An entry of three of Dee Bennetts introductions, different varieties, grown one to a stem. See entry desk for a list of eligible entries.
SECTION H - OPEN CHALLENGE CLASSES
AWARD: Best of Class Perpetual and Keeper Trophy
Class 38 HERBERT C. SWIM TROPHY. A trophy to honor Herb Swim, the creator of a multitude of AARS and other fine roses. An entry of three different varieties of his hybrid tea, grandiflora and/or floribunda introductions, shown in three separate containers. See entry desk for a list of eligible entries. LIMITED - ONE ENTRY PER EXHIBITOR.
Class 39 THE RUTH FABER TROPHY. Bowl (10" diameter) furnished by Show Committee, all types of roses, staged for all round effect on a pedestal 3 feet high. Rose foliage and hips allowed. The quality of bloom, foliage and overall effect to be the prime consideration of the judges. Roses need not be named. Container may be picked up the day before the show. Only Judges who are judging this show are eligible to make entries
in this section.
Class 51 Any type of rose, individual bloom or spray, no more than one of a variety from the same garden. Vases and tags will be furnished in the breakfast room.

THEME: "AROUND THE WORLD WITH ROSES"
Special Rules for Arrangements
1. All roses must be outdoor garden grown and must be of high quality.
2. A rose or roses must be the dominant flower in all arrangements.
3. Names of all roses in each arrangement must be written on entry tag.
4. "AG" MUST be written on the entry tag if roses are arranger grown so the entry will be eligible for a medal certificate.
5. One entry per exhibitor is allowed in each class, but an exhibitor may enter as many classes as desired.
6. Accessories are allowed unless stated otherwise in the schedule. Flowers other than roses, and dried and/or treated dried plant material are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule.
7. A card of intent may be included with an arrangement as an explanation of the arranger's interpretation of the theme or class title, unless the schedule specifically forbids it.
8. An arrangement incorrectly placed in one class when it should have been in another will be judged in the class in which it is placed.
9. All exhibits must be the work of the exhibitor.
10. No one but the exhibitor may touch or move an arrangement. However, in extreme circumstances, if all efforts to locate the arranger have failed, an arrangements chairman may carefully move an arrangement.
11. Suitable backgrounds will be available, white in color. In Sections A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H they will be 5 feet high with a back width of 27" and a 12" wing span each side. In Sections I, J, K, L and M they will be 24" high with back width of 18" and a 9" wing span each side. Space for completing arrangements will be limited.
12. The San Diego Rose Society will not be responsible for exhibits. It is suggested all containers be marked with the name of exhibitor. Your participation is welcomed, and care for your arrangements will be provided to the best of the societys ability. It cannot, however, assume any responsibility for any loss or damage to property.
13. Reservations are required for all arrangements. Reservations will close Thursday, April 26, 2001. Please phone Betty Runion at (858) 279-6134 for reservations.
14. Arrangements must be in place and ready for judging by 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and remain until the closing of the show on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, 2001.
15. Care should be exercised when preparing arrangements in the show area. ALL WATER AND TRASH AROUND YOUR AREA MUST BE CLEANED UP OR DISQUALIFICATION COULD OCCUR!!
16. By entering this show given under ARS rules, exhibitors agree to abide by those rules.
Infringement of the following rules will result in severe penalty.
1. Painted or dyed fresh plant materials, and live creatures
are not allowed.
2. The use of plant materials on the state or local conservation
lists is not permitted.
3. The American flag or flag of any country may not be used in
an arrangement or as a decoration in any way.
There are but two causes for disqualification of an arrangement:
1. Roses not outdoor grown.
2. Use of artificial plant material, except in Section M.

Class 3 "Evita, First Lady of Argentina" Adeline Lawton Memorial Trophy (a line arrangement). In memory of an active garden club member, an authority on native plants, a willing worker and a flower arranger.
Class 4 "Viennese Waltz Amid the Roses" San Diego Rose Society Arrangement Trophy (a colorful mass).
Class 5 "Ancient Italian Treasures" The Garden Gate Ada Perry Trophy (a line mass). In memory of Ada Perry, a remarkable woman who saw equal beauty in every flower and plant. Her advice to millions of readers spanned more than 60 years. Each season she encouraged readers to plant an array of flowers to make their garden gate the prettiest. An arrangement with roses and two or more other types of flowers to be used in this class
Class 6 "The King of Siam" Dallas Runion Ambassador of Roses Trophy. OPEN TO MEN ONLY. A line or line mass. In memory of an amazing man, who was a past President and Ambassador for the San Diego Rose Society. He loved to talk about roses, rose care and to share his roses. Dallas favorite way of sharing his roses was by making arrangements for his church.
