1. The Rose Show will be governed and judged by the rules, regulations, and guidelines of the American Rose Society, as set forth in the Guidelines for Judging Rose Arrangements.
2. The Arrangement Division is open to any exhibitor who is registered for this convention. The Convention Registration Number is the Exhibitors Number and must appear on the entry tag.
3. The show will be held at the DOUBLETREE HOTEL, Bakersfield, Friday, May 4, 2001. The arrangement exhibition area will open Friday, May 5, at 6:00 am. Entries will be accepted until 9:00 am. Judging will begin at 9:30 am. No late entries will be allowed. The show will be open for viewing at the completion of judging. Arrangers will be advised at entry time when they may pick up their arrangements, containers and other properties, awards will be presented at 3:15 pm on Saturday, May 6th. No entries may be removed before the time specified.
4. Staging: STANDARD ARRANGEMENTS. For all standard arrangements, 30" wide tables will be placed against walls that are covered with a beige wallpaper, which provides the background for the staging area. The table tops will be covered with a white tablecloth, and the tables will be skirted with a white skirting. Each individual arrangement will be allotted 30" in width; therefore, each standard arrangement entry will have a table top surface area of 30" x 30".
MINIATURE ARRANGEMENTS. For all miniature arrangements, 30" wide tables will be placed against walls with a stepped riser placed on the table. The stepped staging will be covered with white tablecloth which provides the background for the staging area, The table tops will be covered with a white tablecloth, and the tables will be skirted with a white skirting. Under 5" arrangements will be allotted 8" in width and under 10" arrangements will be allotted 12" in width.
5. All roses must be outdoor garden grown and must be of high quality.
6. Names of all roses in each arrangement must be written on the entry tag. All roses must be correctly named in accordance with the latest edition of Modern Roses, Handbook for Selecting Roses, Combined Rose List or the New Rose Registrations in the American Rose. All roses must be exhibited under their ARS Exhibition Names, as listed in bold type in the ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses. A rose variety need not be registered with the ARS to be exhibited in this show, but must be listed in an ARS recognized publication. ARS publications take priority over Combined Rose List.
7. A rose or roses must provide the dominant flower interest in all arrangements.
8. American Rose Society Medal Certificates may be awarded to arrangements using arranger grown, fresh roses. Entry tags shall be marked
"ARRANGER GROWN" or "AG" if they were grown by the exhibitor. For the Pacific Southwest Challenge Classes, each judge will point score each arrangement. The scores are then averaged by the judging chairman and the winners are determined. The Pacific Southwest Challenge Section and the Judges Section are not eligible for the Medal Certificates.
9. One entry per exhibitor allowed in each class, but exhibitor may enter as
many classes as desired.
10. Accessories allowed unless stated otherwise in schedule. Flowers other
than roses, and dried and/or treated dried plant material are allowed unless prohibited by the schedule. Natural wood (dried, weathered, treated, etc.) is considered dried plant material unless it has been made into art object e.g., a statue. It is then considered an accessory.
11. A card of intent may be included with an arrangement as an explanation of the arrangers interpretation of the theme or class title.
12. The exhibitors are responsible for placing their own arrangements. An arrangement incorrectly placed in one class when it should have been placed in another will be judged in the class in which it has been placed.
13. All exhibits must be the work of a single exhibitor.
14. No one but the exhibitor may touch or move an arrangement.
15. Plant material other than roses may be commercially grown. All roses must be fresh, except for those in the Keepsake Award and Mini-Keepsake Award classes, which specify dried roses.
16. In classes for miniature arrangements, the design must conform to the size specified in each class, and ONLY those roses classified by the ARS as miniature or mini-flora may be used.
17. Backgrounds, niches and underlays may be used, if desired, but must be provided by the exhibitor. There are no height restrictions for standard arrangements, but all parts of the arrangement must be confined within the allotted surface space. In miniature arrangements, backgrounds, niches and underlays are a component of the design and must conform to any size
limitation.
18. Purple ribbon winners must score 90 or higher. To be eligible for American Rose Society Awards, arrangements must score no less than 92 points. Only purple ribbon winners are eligible for American Rose Society Awards.
19. Arrangers names should be on the bottom of containers, etc. Neither Kern County Rose Society, Pacific Southwest District nor the DOUBLETREE HOTEL assumes responsibility for the loss of, or damage to personal property; however, care will be exercised to protect exhibits on display.
20. By entering this show given under ARS rules, exhibitors agree to abide by those rules.
21. Arrangement Judges who are judging arrangements in this show may enter only in the Judges Section.
22. All winners are requested to be present at 4:00 PM Friday, May 4th to accept their trophies or make specific arrangements for their acceptance and delivery. District trophies will be awarded at the Award Banquet.
23. In addition to the appropriate ARS awards, a permanent trophy will be awarded to the best entry in each section except for the Pacific Southwest District Challenge Section. In the District Challenge Sections, a Certificate will be awarded along with the perpetual trophy.
Infringement of the following rules will result in severe penalty:
1. Painted or dyed fresh plant materials, and live creatures are not allowed.
2. The use of plant materials on the state or local conservation lists
is not permitted.
3. The American flag or flag of any country may not be used in an arrangement or as a decoration in any way.
There are but two causes for disqualification of an arrangement:
1. Roses are not outdoor grown.
2. Use of artificial plant material.

Arrangement in the Oriental manner using all fresh plant material utilizing a low container. Water showing as a visusal element.
7. Geisha
Arrangement in the Oriental manner utilizing a tall container.
8. Soaring Wings
Arrangement in free-style Oriental manner.
9. Happy Trails
Traditional line or line-mass arrangement using all fresh plant material.
10. Hall of Flowers
Traditional mass arrangement using all fresh plant material.
11. Timeless

Miniature arrangement not exceeding 10" in height, width or depth. No design or material(s) restrictions. Limited to apprentice or accredited ARS Arrangement Judges judging this show. Type of design must be noted on the

15. Warm Welcome
Roses with rose foliage only. Fresh hips, canes (with or without foliage), and roots may be used. No other plant materials or accessories permitted. Arranger may choose type of design, but must note type on entry tag.
16. The Herbalist
Roses with rose foliage only. Fresh hips, canes (with or without foliage), and roots may be used. No other plant materials or accessories permitted in Modern design.
17. Ring of Fire
Miniature traditional line or line-mass arrangement not to exceed 5" in height, width or depth.
