RULES FOR ROSE SPECIMEN EXHIBITS

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND COMPLETELY

1. Everyone is welcome to exhibit roses in this show provided all roses have been grown by the exhibitor in their own outdoor garden.

2. ALL EXHIBITORS MUST REGISTER at the information desk located at the entrance gate. However, registration numbers are not required on entry tags. Please indicate whether or not you would like to keep your ribbons.

3. Entries will be received from 7:00 am until 10:00 am on Saturday. Vases will be available at 6:00 a.m. Exhibitors will be notified 15 minutes before the close of entries. Entries will close promptly. Entries received thereafter will not be accepted.

4. Only ONE exhibitor or ONE team from any one garden may enter any class. More than one entry of the same variety from the same garden will disqualify each.

5. ARS entry tags must be used. Fill out UPPER PORTION ONLY with your complete name and address. Use only blue or black ballpoint pen. Do not use felt tips or rollerballs because ink may smear if entry tag gets wet.

6. The responsibility for proper rose identification and classification lies totally with the exhibitor, however, all possible assistance will be available by means of current ARS-recognized publications (including the Dobson/Schneider Combined Rose List) and our own Consulting Rosarians.

7. All entries must be entered under the American Rose Society official exhibition names as found in MRXI, the ARS Handbook for Selecting Roses, or CRL.

8. Numbered test roses are not permitted to be exhibited in any class.

9. This is an alphabetically arranged show except for classes calling for several different varieties. Where alphabetized, each variety will constitute a separate class, and be judged on its merits for the variety.

10. Vases will be furnished by the Society in all classes except where noted. PLEASE TAKE ONLY THOSE NEEDED, and return unused vases promptly. All vases and other supplies are the property of the society and must not be taken from the premises. Exhibitors should place their names on the underside of their challenge vases, and arrange for their pickup at the close of the show.

11. Any unwanted growth may be removed from any specimen subject to penalty assessed according to the degree of impairment, and depending upon the proficiency of removal. Remember, many points can be lost by carelessness or neglect in grooming specimens.

12. WEDGES may be used. Wedge should not protrude above the lip of the vase. Judges may penalize for wedging that is distracting.

13. American Rose Society rules of judging will prevail, including any recent changes. Only blue ribbon winners are eligible for trophy or certificate awards. JUDGES’ DECISIONS ARE FINAL.

14. In cases of disqualifications or severe penalization, the judges will write the reason on the entry tag.

15. Each exhibitor agrees to conform to such rules and regulations as the Show Committee may authorize.

16. Neither the LARS nor the Descanso Gardens assumes responsibility for loss of, or damage to personal property; however, care will be exercised to protect exhibits on display.

17. All rose specimens entered in the show become the property of the Society. The Show Committee reserves the right to remove wilted or inferior blooms at any time it is deemed necessary.

18. Trophies will be awarded on SATURDAY, at 2:00 pm. All winners should either be present to accept their trophies, or should make specific arrangements for their acceptance and delivery.

19. The show area will be closed to the public at 3:00 pm, Sunday. NO ROSES ARE TO BE GIVEN TO THE PUBLIC UNTIL THE SHOW COMMITTEE RELEASES THEM, AT WHICH TIME THEY WILL BE SOLD (3 STEMS FOR $1.00).

20. Avoid disqualification. Be careful of the following ARS rules for disqualification.

a. Misnamed.

b. Misclassed.

c. Mislabeled (including omission of your name or its locationanywhere but where specified).

d. Stem-on-stem, except Old Garden Roses and Shrubs.

e. Foreign substance on foliage, stem, or bloom (includes things used in grooming, such as oil, wire, ink, needle, glue, tape, Q-tip, or cotton ball).

f. Not disbudded when required.

g. Violation of ARS or local show rules.

h. Misplaced.

i. A rose not listed in any ARS official publication (except Seedling Class).

21. Exhibitors may place their own challenge entries, however if they do, they agree to accept the responsibility for misplaced entries. The Show Committee will place all other entries. Care will be taken before the show starts to see that all entries are correctly placed.

22. After judging begins, no individual without a job involving the judging process will be allowed in the show area.

23. Official publications for use in judging include Modern Roses, ARS Magazines, ARS Annuals, Handbook For Selecting Roses, and the Dobson/Schneider Combined Rose List. However, any discrepancy between ARS publications and Combined Rose List will defer to ARS publications.

24. Arrangement judges who are only judging the arrangement section of this show may enter roses in the horticultural section. Horticultural judges who are only judging the horticultural section of this show may place entries in the arrangement section.
