El Paso Rose Society
Rose Show October 22, 2000

Rules

For

Horticultural Exhibitors

The Show will be Governed by the Standard Rules, Regulations and Guidelines of The American Rose Society.
  1. Competition is open to all rose growers regardless of residence. All entries must have been grown by the exhibitor in his own private outdoor garden (for a minimum of 3 months)
  2. Entries will be received from 8:00 am to 10:00 am on Saturday, October 22, 2000, at Bassett Center Mall, 6101 Gateway West (Interstate 10 at Geronimo), El Paso, TX.
  3. Exhibitor need not be a member of the El Paso Rose Society.
  4. All containers, ARS entry tags and entry sheets will be furnished by the Show Committee. Use of English Boxes will be by reservation (Bud Dehrkoop 751-3631).
  5. All entries must be accompanied by an entry tag showing: section, class, variety name, and exhibitor’s name and address on both sections of the card. Entries are to be given to a member of the Show Placement Committee only after all sections of the entry card have been properly completed. Exception: Actual placement of Rose Bowls on show table will be by exhibitor.
  6. Only one member of a family may enter any one class, but two may enter as a team.
  7. Only one entry of the same variety will be allowed from the same garden in any one class. Varieties having "climbing" as part of their class name must be entered in their respective bush-type classes.
  8. Current American Rose Society rules which establish type of rose shall prevail. Eligible roses must be listed in Modern Roses, the International Register of New Rose Varieties, The American Rose magazine, The American Rose Annual, the Handbook for Selecting Roses and The Combined Rose List.*

    * In case of conflict between The Combined Rose List and ARS publications—ARS publications will be the final authority. The latest supplements to these publications is the final authority. An exception is made for special classes for unregistered seedlings and sports.

  9. One Bloom Per Stem specimens may be naturally grown, with no side buds, or disbudded. Other than one bloom per stem, specimens should be shown as naturally grown, but an exhibitor may remove unwanted growth subject to possible penalization.
  10. Judging will be based on a comparison of approach to perfection of the individual variety. At the time of judging, an exhibition rose should be at its most perfect phase of possible beauty, which is usually 1/2 to 3/4 open. Grandifloras and Hybrid Teas shown as sprays should be exhibited in a similar manner as Floribunda sprays. Floribundas and Polyanthas shown as inflorescences, or sprays, should display the maximum proportion of blooms at or near the most perfect phase of beauty for that particular variety. Specimens in fully-open classes must be fully open and the stamens must be easily visible. Length of stem should be in proportion to size of bloom. Foliage should be clean and free of spray residue.
  11. The following scale of points will be used for judging entries:

    Form 25 points
    Substance 15 points
    Color 20 points
    Stem & Foliage 20 points
    Balance & Proportion 10 points
    Size 10 points
    Total 100 points

  12. Entries will be disqualified for the following reasons:

    a. Misnamed, misclassed, misplaced, unlabeled or mislabeled.

    b. Stem-on-Stem (a specimen with a portion of the previous stem growth attached). Exception: Old Garden Roses and Shrubs may be shown stem-on-stem.

    c. Presence of foreign substance applied to foliage, stem or bloom to improve the appearance of specimen.

    d. Not disbudded. Any class calling for one bloom per stem specimens must be exhibited without side buds. A side bud is defined as growth emanating from a leaf axil having sufficient maturity to display the formation of a stem with or without flower buds. The presence of one or two leaflets or leaves at the leaf axil with no evidence of a stem is cause for penalization but not disqualification.

    e. An entry in violation of ARS rules or local society rules applying to this specific show.

  13. Clear plastic wrap and green foam wedges are permitted in vase necks to support specimen stems.
  14. Members of the Show Classification Committee will only assist the public and new members.
  15. Exhibits must remain intact until the close of show at 6:00 pm. Specimen entries become the property of the Show Committee.
  16. During placement, only the Show Placement Committee will be permitted in the show area, except for Rose Bowl exhibitors.
  17. ARS Judges will begin judging at 10:00 am and will be in accordance with current GUIDELINES FOR JUDGING ROSES. The decision of the judges is final.
  18. Only Judges, Clerks and Show Chairperson will be allowed in immediate show area during judging.
  19. First, second, third and fourth place designation will be awarded in each class where warranted. NO award is required for any entry or class. Certificates and awards will be given to the first place winners only.
  20. The El Paso Rose Society shall not be liable for loss or damage to entries, containers, or property, or for injury to persons attending the rose show. Liability of all nature is disclaimed.
